– The Tour-de-Peilz, catheter renewal, training and importance of reading

Published today at 7.10am Training

It concerns Dominique Dirlewanger’s reflection “Knowing how to read books” (“24 Heures” of January 15).

Thank you, Mr. Dirlewanger, for once again highlighting the importance of teaching children to read, understand and analyze texts longer than 140 characters. Our democracy and our culture, in every sense of the word, fundamentally depend on it.

Reading, which nourishes the brain and spirit by broadening the spectrum of experience, is a primary tool for reflection, but also a great source of pleasure. A bit like any resistance practice, you have to train it enough to get satisfaction from it… which you will no longer be able to do without.

It is only by practicing from a young age up to compulsory school that habits can consolidate. Of course, it’s never too late to start, but why reserve this skill for gyms, as Dirlewanger suggests? It seems to me that a school with a truly democratic objective should aim to equip as many students as possible with the tools “to be able to navigate contemporary complexity” (text by Dirlewanger).

My thesis is the opposite of an elitist position: on the contrary, by giving all children access to understanding complex texts, from compulsory school onwards, we broaden access to democracy and culture.

The Tour-de-Peilz

On December 7, members registered for the session we were eagerly awaiting witnessed the presentation of the results of the participatory day on September 30, 2023 on the future of our beautiful castle of La Tour-de-Peilz.

The results presented to us were very complicated, both in form and substance. What to do with this building that all the Boélands want to be friends with? We went to a restaurant with a terrace to finally admire the lake while sipping a coffee, a syrup or a beer, before or after the visit to the Game Museum.

Logically the restaurant should be in the main building, but this seems incompatible with the museum. We are told that access to the restaurant should be from the north side of the main building and that service should follow a path around the keep from the west side to arrive on the lakefront terrace. Since the attempts at explanation were incomprehensible, it was concluded that the training credits would clarify everything.

The Municipality announces that the Swiss Games Museum will remain in its location according to the will of the Executive. So how can we respond to participatory impulses if such an important decision has already been made? For the moment the museum is installed throughout the castle. There is no more room for other activities.

In December 2023, the traditional Christmas at the Castle was moved to Place du Temple and Place des Anciens-Fossés. Will we forget this warm cocoon and its perfectly adapted playful atmosphere and reserve the castle courtyard only for museum events?

Lausanne

The city and canton will give new light to the cathedral which will be even more beautiful when it celebrates its 750th anniversary in 2025. Well done. This information (“24 hours” of January 13th) brings to mind the following memory. For the first time in the history of this canton, in 1946, a socialist joined the Council of State: Arthur Maret, former trustee of Lausanne. How was it possible to give a position in government to a red man, a henchman of Satan, in a quiet canton like ours? This was what we thought at the time.

Now, what did Arthur Maret, the new head of the Department of Public Works, tell us? He calls his bailiff around 11:30 Wednesday morning. No one answers. The following Wednesday, by chance, he saw his bailiff putting on his coat at 11, when he was supposed to work until noon. He asks. “Mr. Councilor, don’t you know? Every Wednesday I have the mission to go around the cathedral with a long pole. I make stones fall from the walls which are dangerous for passers-by.” The following year, Maret called for relatively large annual amounts to be allocated to maintain this jewel of our heritage.

A few years later, a socialist presided over the Council of State: André Gavillet, who was refused the Department of Education on the pretext of declaring himself agnostic. He has the task of giving the speech marking the ceremonies of the 700th anniversary of the monument. Those who participated will remember it for a long time. An anthology piece entitled: “When the cathedrals were white”. Thanks to all those who have known and will continue to give this monument the interest it deserves.

It concerns the reflection “The world of work? Get back to work” (“24 hours” of January 10th”).

But no, no, the boss’s job is not just to pocket the profits! No boss, no business! No business, no work!

Today the businesses and companies that make up our economic fabric are subject to the competitive pressures of the market and the constant technological evolution of their various professions. Professional learning is becoming increasingly complex and the amount of knowledge must be acquired over a period of time that has not changed for many decades. It is therefore understandable that employers’ associations ask for additional time for career study.

On the other hand, I agree with the thought that vocational training focused exclusively on technical skills in no way prepares the apprentice to challenge the life that awaits him. Why must the apprentice be deprived of the knowledge that allows him to develop his personality while high school students have the possibility of accessing the humanities, the study of French, history and other knowledge?

To give apprentices the same opportunities as high school students, we should separate professional training into two phases: the study of the profession in the classic period of three or four years depending on the professional direction and add to this a duration equal to determined for access to the studies mentioned above.

This additional learning period will have a certain cost which will not have to be covered by the training company but by the cantonal training service. This would restore equality of treatment and opportunities between the apprentice and the gymnasium student.
