This is the case

Earlier in June, three shark attacks occurred within 90 minutes at two different beaches in Florida. The first incident happened to Elisabeth Foley, 45, who lost part of her arm. Ms. Foley was rushed to the hospital and survived.

The next two shark attacks occurred almost simultaneously. The two victims were identified as McCray Faust, 17, and her friend, Lulu Gribbin, 15. The sharks bit the two girls while they were swimming in the ocean.

The incident left Faust with a leg injury, but not too serious. Meanwhile, Lulu had part of her arm and almost all of her right leg bitten off by the shark. Lulu is now out of danger and her life is no longer in danger.

Why do sharks attack humans?

Although shark attacks on humans often attract media attention and cause public uproar, according to experts, sharks rarely attack humans.

According to statistics in the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File, in 2023, there were 69 intentional shark attacks on humans worldwide, most of which occurred in the state of Florida, USA. Of these, 10 attacks resulted in fatalities.

The statistics also show that 42% of shark attack victims in 2023 were surfers.

Scientists say sharks rarely attack humans, except in cases where they mistake humans for their favorite food, such as seals, sea lions… or when they are very hungry.

There are some cases where sharks attack humans to protect their territory or because they are startled or agitated because humans swim too close…
