The death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter accident brought up the direction of the development of the processes in the region. The main issue for us is the further development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations.

Publika.az Aynur Jamal, head of “Telegraf” Media Group, political scientist, said about this in his statement to Akhar.az.

A. Jamal did not agree with the conspiracy theories about the helicopter crash. According to him, it is clear that the accident occurred due to technical reasons, especially weather conditions:

“In the world experience, there are enough such accidents in which heads of state were killed. The accident in which his chief was killed entered the history of the world as another incident caused by a technical malfunction. Now the main issue is how this event will affect the region.”

According to A. Jamal, the death of the president will not result in a violation of the state mechanism in Iran:

“There have been periods of political crises in Iran many times, but as a result, this country has managed to preserve its system, especially the religious leader factor is a decisive factor. It is clear that the death of his leader will not cause a serious crisis, according to Iranian legislation, the time of the next presidential elections has already been determined, and next month the Iranian people will elect their president again.”

A. Jamal believes that Raisi’s death will not harm the process of normalization in Azerbaijan-Iran relations:

“His boss, including Foreign Minister Abdullahian, who died in the same accident as him, led the process of normalization of relations with Azerbaijan. The death of both men may raise some concerns about the outlook, especially considering the presence of anti-Azerbaijani forces inside Iran. However, I think that this accident will not affect the process of normalization on the Baku-Tehran line. Because the Iranian political elite seems to support the normalization process. In addition, the development of bilateral relations with Azerbaijan is the political line chosen by the Iranian state. In parallel, it is observed that the trust in Armenia is shaken in Tehran. In Iran, they realized that the country that brought foreign forces to the region is Armenia, and official Iravan is actually engaged in political fraud. On the one hand, they create the image of pursuing a policy of rapprochement with Iran, but on the other hand, they bring foreign forces from Iran’s “red lines” to the region. The late President Raisi warned Armenia several times about this. I believe that the crisis in Iran-Azerbaijani relations has already been resolved, and bilateral relations will further develop from now on.”

A. Jamal thinks that the “Giz Galasi” and “Khudafarin” dams, which are opened on the Araz River, make an important contribution to the convergence of the Baku-Tehran line, in addition to the economy of the region:

“These and other important projects are being implemented between Azerbaijan and Iran. One of such projects is the North-South transport corridor. The construction of Agband road, which will be used in this project, continues. This project will be one of the main transport-transit roads connecting the regions. Through this road, cargo will be transported to Turkey, as well as through Iran to the Persian Gulf. In the coming period, the construction of the railway line will make transportation faster and more efficient. These projects bring Azerbaijan and Iran even closer. It is expected that the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran will resume its activities in the coming months. The attack on our embassy was one of the main problems in bilateral relations. However, the person who attacked our embassy has already been punished. After that, there will be no obstacles to the restoration of the activity of our embassy.”

A. Jamal emphasized that the development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations is an important message for the forces that want to take advantage of the crisis that arose at the time, or are trying to create a crisis and use it for their own interests.
