JAKARTA – Israelis are haunted by an outbreak of the disease caused by the West Nile virus. So far, at least 100 people have been infected.

Although generally easy to treat, in certain cases West Nile virus infection can cause severe critical illness, even death. There are certain groups who are at high risk of experiencing severity if infected with West Nile virus. They are patients with chronic diseases that suppress the immune system, cancer patients with poor immune systems, infants, and the elderly.

“West Nile virus can be severe if the patient experiences symptoms that include neurological signs such as meningitis, acute encephalitis, or acute paralysis,” the Jerusalem Post reported, quoted Tuesday (2/7/2024).

It was also stated in the report that to date there is no West Nile virus vaccine for humans.

“There is no vaccine for humans against this virus. Currently a vaccine is only available for protection in horses,” the report said.

So, how to treat West Nile virus infection?

It is said that there is no specific treatment for this disease.

“Current efforts include giving intravenous infusions of antibodies called IVIG and interferon drugs that can boost the immune system’s ability to eliminate the spread of the virus in the body,” the report added.

As part of the treatment, the patient will also receive fluids, antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, and if necessary, be placed on a ventilator.
