COVID-19 Minister Chris Hipkins says New Zealand will remove mandatory quarantine (MIQ) requirements for travellers entering the country, but they will have to self-isolate for seven days and take COVID-19 tests before and after travel.

Travelers will be able to enter New Zealand without mandatory isolation in accordance with the following three stages:

Opening to fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens, resident visa holders and other eligible travellers under current border settings, from Australia, from 11:59pm on Sunday 16 January 2022, provided they have been in Australia or New Zealand in the past 14 days.

Opening to fully vaccinated New Zealand citizens, resident visa holders and other eligible travellers under our current border configuration, from all but very high-risk countries, from 11:59pm on Sunday 13 February 2022.

Opening to fully vaccinated foreign nationals, organized by visa category, from Saturday, April 30, 2022 onwards.

The very high risk classification for Indonesia, Fiji, India, Pakistan and Brazil will be removed at the beginning of December 2021 and travellers from these countries will be able to enter New Zealand in the same way as travellers from most other countries. Papua New Guinea will continue to be classified as very high risk.

The three stages above aim to mitigate risk to a medium level. Travellers who do not meet the requirements of these stages will be allowed to enter the country under the old lockdown model (MIQ) that New Zealand has used to contain the pandemic. This model consists of seven days of government-monitored isolation and three days of home isolation. This includes those who do not meet the vaccination requirements, including unvaccinated New Zealand citizens and those coming from very high-risk countries.

All travellers who are not entering through Model Isolation (MIQ) must meet the following requirements:

– Negative result before traveling.

– Proof (certificate) of having the complete vaccination schedule.

– Traveler’s declaration regarding his/her travel history.

– Test on the day or the day after arrival in the country.

– Voluntary quarantine for seven days

– Negative test before entering the community

“We have always said that the country would open up in a controlled manner, and this began by halving the mandatory isolation period (MIQ). Maintaining seven days of isolation for fully vaccinated travellers is an important part of the reconnection strategy while ensuring safety. These requirements will continue to be reviewed according to the risk posed by travellers entering the country,” the minister said.

Education New Zealand (ENZ) Chief Executive Grant McPherson has welcomed the New Zealand Government’s move to open its borders to international students.

“This is great news for the international education sector. We will keep stakeholders in the sector updated as we learn how the new measures taken by the Government work,” said the director.

The New Zealand government will release further details on how self-isolation will be implemented in due course. 1. There will be guidance on how people can travel from their arrival airport to their self-isolation location and requirements for places where they can self-isolate. With Infobae
