MOSCOW – Ukraine says Russia seeking revenge as Kyiv announced more settlements had been captured in its daring cross-border offensive.

The Russian airstrikes on Ukraine were massive.

Moving in waves from several directions and at different speeds and altitudes, 127 missiles and 109 drones attacked 15 of Ukraine’s 24 regions.

The offensive is seen in Ukraine as revenge by Russian President Vladimir Putin for Kyiv’s bold offensive into Russia’s western Kursk region that began in early August and has resulted in the takeover of more than 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles).

“He is a vindictive person, he was offended,” Lieutenant General Ihor Romanenko, a former deputy chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, told Al Jazeera.

The attack began at dawn on Monday when a swarm of heavy drones laden with explosives took off from the town of Yeisk on the Sea of Azov, southwestern Russia.

Then a Kinzhal (Dagger) ballistic missile was fired from under the wing of a MiG 31 fighter jet stationed in the western Russian city of Lipetsk.

Kinzhal can maneuver in the air and travel at speeds of up to an astonishing 4 km (2.5 miles) per second – half the speed a rocket needs to reach space.

A Tu-95 heavy bomber in the Volgograd region launched a Kh-101 missile, the type that hit Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital in July.

Despite their subsonic speed, the Kh-101s were difficult to intercept because they could only fly 50 meters (164 feet) above the ground and zigzagged en route to their targets.
