“Strategy for a climate-neutral healthcare system” sets out a roadmap for CO2 reduction in the healthcare sector
Vienna (OTS) – Austria has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040. To achieve this goal, targeted measures to reduce emissions are necessary in all areas of life – including in the health sector. This is currently responsible for around seven percent of CO2 emissions in Austria. “With the ‘Strategy for a Climate-Neutral Health System’ presented today, we are presenting a roadmap for how the health system in Austria can become more climate-friendly. In this way, we protect the climate and at the same time relieve the burden on the health sector, which is exposed to further strains due to the climate crisis and its health consequences for people,” says Ralph Schallmeiner, health spokesman for the Greens.
The plan includes measures on sustainable procurement criteria, reusable medical products, optimizing drug packaging sizes, building renovation, the food system and energy supply, and waste management.
“While others in health policy have looked the other way for years and preferred to launch marketing gimmicks rather than health reform, we Greens are once again showing how we are tackling the open issues in the health system,” says Schallmeiner, explaining: “After a real health reform that secures the Austrian health system in the long term and puts patients first instead of individual stakeholders and industry representatives, we are now also making the health system climate-fit.”
