MADRID (EUROPA PRESS TELEVISION).– A police officer was injured on Saturday during what French authorities have described as the deliberate burning of a synagogue in the French municipality of Hérault, in the south of the country.

Initial investigations indicate that the fire started at around 8:30 in the morning when two vehicles caught fire, one of which was carrying a gas cylinder. The officer was injured when he was trying to establish a security perimeter.

The Beth Yaacov synagogue in La Grande-Motte suffered material damage to two of its doors due to fire, in what Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin described as “a manifestly criminal arson” before ordering the arrest of an individual caught on security cameras setting fire to one of the vehicles before the explosions.

The injured officer was immediately treated in the emergency room of a hospital in Montpellier and his life is not in danger, according to BFMTV.

Darmanin and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal will travel to the town this afternoon to receive an update on what happened.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Saturday’s attack on a synagogue in southern France “a terrorist act” and an example that “the fight against anti-Semitism is a constant battle and the fight of a united nation.”

The president added that security forces will do everything in their power to catch the person responsible.
