About Fattoruso

The multi-instrumentalist (born 1943) was a South American pop star before becoming a key figure in the development of jazz in South America. Born in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, he played double bass with the traditional jazz group The Hot Blowers from 1959. He was still 21 in 1964, when he and his brother Osvaldo Fattoruso (1948-2012) formed the Beatles-inspired Los Shakers. Hugo was lead singer, guitarist and also played keyboards, while the two brothers shared writing duties. The band was highly successful in Argentina and Uruguay, releasing three albums in South America. After the band folded in 1968, Fattoruso was keen to explore his interests in jazz and Latin American music, both of which had already begun to enter the music of Los Shakers.
He and Osvaldo moved to New York, and together with bassist Hugo Thielmann, they started the jazz fusion group Opa, which was based on traditional Uruguayan “candombe” rhythms. The band made its first appearance on an Airto Moreira album, *Fingers* in 1973, which also features Flora Purim. Their “true” debut album was *Goldenwings* in 1976, with Moreira producing and adding percussion, plus appearances by Purim and Hermeto Pascoal. Fattoruso was back in Brazil in the 1980s, and continued to work with Brazilian artists. In the 1990s, he began a successful collaboration with Milton Nascimento, which included the Grammy-winning 1997 album, *Nascimento*.

Last year, Fattoruso embarked on an international tour, which not only celebrated his artistic career, but also reaffirmed his influence and relevance in contemporary music. At each performance, Fattoruso delighted audiences with his virtuosity and his ability to fuse genres and styles, consolidating himself as a true living legend of music.

In 2019, Fattoruso received the Latin Grammy for Musical Excellence, a prestigious recognition of his outstanding career and significant contributions to Latin music. Among the praise he has received over the years, the following stand out: “Fattoruso is, along with Piazzolla, perhaps the greatest exponents of music from the Río de La Plata”; Andrés Calamaro, who called him “a living legend”; and Jorge Drexler, who said: “I always thought that ‘Rompan Todo’ was by the Beatles, I hope someone confuses a song of mine with one by the Beatles.” This award is added to dozens of national and international recognitions such as the Gardel Awards, the Konex Mercosur Award in 2015, the Graffiti Award, among others.
