After a long time in Pakistan’s film industry, these days ‘The Legend of Mulajit’, made in the style of the old popular Punjabi film Mulajit, has created a sensation in the cinemas.

Although actors like Sultan Rahi or Mustafa Qureshi, who have acted for years as per the Punjabi culture, are not involved, still this film is taking a ‘rush’.

According to the film producer Amara Hekmat, The Legend of Moolah Jat has made a business of 50 crores in five days.

The film has been a hit at the box office and it has so far collected 23 million dollars worldwide including Pakistan and more than 50 crore Pakistani rupees, but some cinemas are not playing this film.

In this regard, filmmaker and exhibitor Nadeem Mandviwala says that ‘some cinema owners are making false propaganda regarding the exhibition of the film, to which they will give a detailed answer soon.’

Film business and support of cinema owners

Amara Hikmat said that ‘The Legend of Moula Jat’ has been released on more than 500 screens in 25 countries across the world. This is the highest and widest release for any Pakistani or Punjabi film ever.’

He further said that ‘in its first weekend (four days) in the UK, this film has earned 315,000 pounds from 79 locations. It is the highest ever opening weekend collection for any Pakistani or Punjabi language film in the UK, ranking ninth in the UK box office top 10.’

According to Amara Hikmat: ‘In Canada, The Legend of Moolah Jat did a business of three hundred and twenty four thousand Canadian dollars at the box office and earned the ranking number six. The total for North America is over US$600,000.’

In the United Arab Emirates, “The Legend of Moolah Jut” earned more than 515,000 in four days, while in other countries, Australia, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Southeast Asia, the business of the film was 250,000 dollars. It is more.

Bilal Lashari, the film’s director, said in a statement: ‘I am overwhelmed by the love the film has received from fans and critics around the world.’

He added: ‘We are proud that The Legend of Moolah Jat has played a major role in putting Pakistani cinema on the global map as it continues to win hearts in cinemas across the world.’

Film producer Amara Hekmat said that ‘The legend of Mola Jat is the hard work of all of us for many years. We are very happy that our film has broken previous records and set a new benchmark for Pakistani cinema, which has been loved and appreciated by audiences and critics not only domestically but globally.’

On the other hand, the film’s distributor Nadeem Mandviwala said in a conversation with Independent Urdu that the three largest cinema chains comprising more than 50% of the country’s cinemas did not support the most expensive film of Pakistan, yet every day. The box office position is going well and is unprecedented in the history of Pakistani film industry. In my 42 years I have never seen a film perform on this scale.’

According to Nadeem, ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat’ has been released in theaters worldwide on 13 October 2022. The cast of the film includes Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Hamaima Malik, Gohar Rashid, Rahila Agha, Rashid Mehmood, Waseem Ali, Nair Ejaz, Faris Shafi and Ali Azmat.

Why object to cinema owners?

Ijaz Kamran, the leader of the cinema industry of Lahore, told Independent Urdu that ‘The Legend of Moolah Jat, made with the latest technology, is playing in all the modern cinemas. Those who have fulfilled the conditions have got the film, but some cinema owners in Karachi and Sindh are objecting that it is a Punjabi film and people do not understand it, so they are not promoting it.

According to Ejaz Kamran, the old traditional circuit cinemas could not play the movie due to lack of upgrade, however, the movie Mula Jat is being screened in most of the cinemas in Lahore.

Nadeem Mandviwala says that most cinema owners are supporting the success of the film but some are objecting unnecessarily.

According to Nadeem Mandviwala: ‘After a long time, the industry is getting a boost, so why the objection? Those who have this problem that the language is Punjabi, English and Urdu transcripts have also been given in the film, so this objection is unjustified. The good thing is that the film is gaining popularity all over the world.’
