The La France Insoumise (LFI) party announced on Tuesday that it would call for a demonstration on September 7 against President Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to appoint a female prime minister from the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) bloc, which won the largest number of seats in the legislative elections.

“The president’s decision seriously endangers democracy by rejecting the results of the elections and the government of the New Popular Front, which won the elections,” LFI said in a statement.

“Given the exceptional gravity of the situation, we call for a firm response from French society,” he added, before hoping that the political, trade union and association forces “involved in the defence of democracy will join this call.”

LFI’s announcement comes after Marine Tondelier, The head of the environmental party EELV – also part of the NFP – announced that there would be “mobilizations” to protest against Macronalthough he stressed that they would be “peaceful.”

The Elysée Palace announced on Monday that Macron would not appoint the NFP candidate, Lucie Castets, as prime minister, because the bloc would have no other parliamentary support and would be overthrown by a vote of no confidence from the other parties.

The presidential headquarters announced that Macron would resume his political consultations today with “party leaders and personalities who are distinguished by their experience in the service of the State.”

However, there has been no official announcement of the programme of meetings today, although it is known that neither LFI nor the far-right Marine Le Pen and her allies are expected to be among the guests.

Macron has already met with representatives of a parliamentary group which brings together regionalist and nationalist deputies from various territories in metropolitan France and overseas.

It has since been leaked that he will receive the leaders of the conservative party The Republicans, which, although it has rejected a coalition with the Macronist bloc, does not rule out collaboration.

However, the left – outside of LFI – has refused to go to the Elysée, so the consultations will be brief.

“I refuse to be complicit in a parody of democracy,” said this morning the first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, in an interview on France 2.

“What is really happening (.,.) is that (Macron) does not want the New Popular Front programme to be implemented, and that we repeal the pension reform” of last year, he added.
