SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- Cuban meteorologists reported that intense local storms and hail occurred on Monday afternoon in some cities in the Artemisa province.

The day was marked by “strong activity of showers”, rain and thunderstorms in the province of Artemisa that were severe in some localities, according to specialist Raydel Ruisánchez.

In the municipality of Güira de Melena, the storm, of great intensity, was characterized by hailstones the size of chickpeas.

In addition, there was heavy rainfall, with a cumulative total of 57.6 millimetres in just one hour.

According to the expert, the turbulence was caused by “the great instability typical of the afternoon,” stimulated by the passage of a tropical wave to the south and by favorable conditions in the upper layers of the troposphere.

“There was heavy rain and thunderstorm activity this afternoon in a large part of the Cuban territory. Unstable conditions in the afternoon, the passage of a tropical wave through the seas to the south and the presence of a trough over the territory were stimulating favorable conditions for rain. This situation will continue for tomorrow,” he said.

Rains and storms

For Monday, the Meteorological Institute had forecast some showers and rain in the afternoon, mainly in Pinar del Río and towards the interior and south of the rest of the country.

They also warned of waves on the northeastern coast and light waves on the rest of the northern coast, as well as from Cabo Cruz to Punta Maisí.

Artemisa has witnessed several storms with hail this year. In May, a storm caused havoc in various towns in western Cuba in that region, with a heavy fall of hail in Bahía Honda, Guanajay, Quiebra Hacha (Mariel), and Bauta.
