GERMANY (DPA/EP).- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday that the number of deportations would increase as long as they were carried out in a “coherent” manner and based on the law, in response to opposition demands following the attack committed by a Syrian citizen on Friday that left three dead in Solingen.

“We deeply regret how terrible this crime is. It moves us all, and none of us will forget it,” said Scholz during an event to pay tribute to the two victims of the attack, which is already being used by the far right to justify its anti-immigration campaigns.

“We will not allow our community spirit to be destroyed by evil criminals who pursue the worst ideologies, and we will act against them with the utmost rigor and severity,” Scholz promised.

On Friday, a 26-year-old Syrian national, who had a deportation order, killed three people and wounded eight others, four of them seriously, during a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary.

The attack took place just over a week before regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to do well.
