The most important mathematical distinction in the region was received by the researcher from the Faculty of Mathematics at UC, Héctor Pastén, after being awarded the UMALCA Recognition Award.

The event took place during the Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Mathematics (CLAM) 2024, which took place in João Pessoa, Brazil, and is organized every four years by the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean (UMALCA).

Among the award criteria, the CLAM Scientific Committee considered the originality, depth, relevance and international impact of the mathematical work developed by Pastén, who was nominated and recommended by experts in his area of research, focused on Number Theory.

Created in 2000, the UMALCA Recognition Award is granted every four years to mathematicians who, among other parameters, are under 40 years of age and who work permanently in Latin America, with a good part of their career developed in institutions in the region.

Héctor Pastén has received numerous awards for his research, which focuses on understanding phenomena related to rational points on manifolds (a modern version of the classic topic of Diophantine equations), their analogues in complex variable theory, and problems in mathematical logic related to number theory.

His work has led him to receive a series of awards, including the Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada (2014), the Canadian Mathematical Society Doctoral Award for the most outstanding thesis (2015), the Mathematical Council of the Americas Prize (2017), the G. de B. Robinson Prize of the CMS (2023); and the Ribenboim Prize (2024).

He is a world-renowned expert on Number Theory and has led the organization of important international events on this topic.

He has also been invited as a plenary speaker at the most important international conferences on Number Theory, such as Journées Arithmétiques, in 2023; and the CNTA, in 2024.
