From July 19 to August 6, the Lima International Book Fair will be held, the largest and most important editorial and cultural event in Peru, where Chile will participate with a national delegation and an exhibition to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the creation of Condorito.

The fair brings together more than 540,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors, in addition to various cultural events aimed at the general public.

“Being present for 12 consecutive years at the Lima Fair is very important for our country, both for the dissemination of our literary culture and the strengthening of ties between Peru and Chile. The good reception of the literary industry in Lima means that its internationalization is advancing and strengthening with the help of institutions that work collaboratively with the aim of showing the rich national bibliodiversity, in addition to giving space to new creators,” said Carolina Arredondo, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

The Chilean delegation will include 10 national authors, including Claudio Aguilera, Rubén Eyzaguirre, Pedro Maino, María José Ferrada, Alberto Fuguet, Daniela Catrileo, Roxana Miranda, Daniel Rojas Pachas and Victoria Ramírez. The publishers that will attend include Al Aire Libro, Metales Pesados, Navaja, Calcetines Animados and El Nido del Búho, among others.

As part of the 75th anniversary of the creation of the character Condorito by René Ríos, the Embassy of Chile in Peru together with ProChile, have organized the exhibition “The Lives of Condorito”, which will cover the history of the most famous comic strip character in Latin America, from its origins to the present. This exhibition, curated by Claudio Aguilera, premiered at the National Library of Chile in 2019 and has visited different countries in Latin America, arriving for the first time in Peru, as part of the Lima International Book Fair.

In addition, there will be a special program of activities for the 75th anniversary of Condorito at FIL Lima 2024, led by Claudio Aguilera, curator of the aforementioned exhibition; Pedro Maino, member of the Pepo Foundation and Rubén Eyzaguirre, historical cartoonist of this comic, who will be accompanied by Pepo’s grandson, Sebastián Ríos Oto.

The 30 m2 Chilean pavilion will house an exhibition of books from approximately 30 publishers, as well as material related to Condorito. The pavilion’s design will continue to focus on Children’s Rights, by the honored national illustrator Paloma Valdivia, just as the Chilean pavilions have been at various book fairs.

“Since 2012, Chile has had a prominent participation in the Lima International Book Fair, strengthening cultural and diplomatic relations with Peru. This year, the country will have a pavilion where the contemporary Chilean publishing offer can be displayed with more than 30 publishers, where ProChile supports the participation of two from the Tarapacá region. With this participation, it helps us to show regional bibliodiversity. Being in Lima is part of the coordinated work to internationalize the Chilean publishing industry together with MINCAP and DIRAC, plus the sector’s associations and cooperatives. South America is a natural destination for publishing exports and being at FIL Lima is an opportunity to share and show the prolific national publishing production and give space to new creators,” said Raúl Vilches, head of the Creative Industries department at ProChile.

It should be noted that the coordination of Chilean participation is carried out jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, through the National Council of Books and Reading, in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Directorate of Export Promotion (ProChile), the Division of Culture, Arts, Heritage and Public Diplomacy (Dirac) and the Embassy of Chile in Peru.
