The Road Agency (API) promises not to make major repairs on the Trakia highway this year, which would make it difficult for those traveling to the sea.

“This year, no major repair works are planned on the Trakia highway, all repairs are local and are carried out on days of the week when traffic is not busy. No repairs are carried out on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and people can safely travel to the sea,” said the head of the API Yordan Valchev to BNR.

He added that on the “Hemus” highway, two of the four tunnels are being repaired, which should be completed by the beginning of July. Despite the assurances of the head of the API, the repairs of the tunnels seem to be in a very early stage.

Valchev says that the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs shows a decrease in the number of victims on the roads.

“For the first three months of 2024 alone, casualties have decreased by about 40 compared to the previous year. Partly this is due to control by the traffic police, but partly because of the news that there will be an average speed check. … This measure has proven in many places in Europe that it works,” Valchev said.

It is not clear how a measure that has not yet been introduced, and it is not at all known when it will be introduced, can lead to a reduction in road casualties. The only serious measure that has been introduced recently is the confiscation of cars for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. She appealed to the Constitutional Court.

The head of the API expects that in September the measure to detect the average speed of the cars moving on the highways by the cameras of the toll system will come into force.
