The Timitar Festival “Signs and Culture” kicked off last Thursday evening in the city of Agadir. This year, the event has reached its 19th edition, remaining true to its theme “Amazigh artists welcome world music” through an artistic program that will see artists from Morocco and abroad meet with the audience of the city of rebirth over three days, from July 4 to 6.

The programming for the evenings of the first day of this major artistic event, which is organized under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, on both the Hope Square and the open-air theater platforms, witnessed the presence of an artistic combination that responded to the various tastes of the people of Greater Agadir, visitors to the city, and fans of this global celebration.

In the Place de la Hope, and similar to the open-air theatre, the large audience, which exceeded 20,000, had an appointment with various styles of Amazigh music, including the music of the young generation, such as Karim Al-Jawad, with the presence of the art of Rawis with wonderful singing and dancing performances by the pioneers of this style of singing (Raisat: Tihihit Titrit, Amina Tiwirit, and Fatima Tassadit); in addition to the significant presence of the melodious voice of Khadija Atlas and also the dances of Ahwash Taliouine.

Continuing on its approach, and committed to its theme of celebrating musical diversity and world music, the large audience that came to attend the first evening of this artistic event, especially the youth, had an encounter with musical and singing performances in the genre of Arabic pop and fusion, presented by Hamza Namira, Zakaria Ghafouli, the artist Oum, and Faia Youna; and it was met with great response, as was evident in the audience repeating parts of the artists’ repertoires on the platforms of the Hope Square and the open-air theater.

The Hope Square stage hosted international electronic music, represented by DJ Omari, a prominent figure in the Moroccan and international electronic music scene, accompanied by animated visual performances of the vidje art.

It is noteworthy that a statement from the organizing association indicated that the continuation of the Timitar Festival for nineteen years is “more than just a musical celebration, but rather a cultural event in which traditions meet modernity, and local voices meet international ones, to create an artistic combination that only comes together in Agadir, the capital of Amazigh culture, and it is an experience dedicated to the festival’s audience.”

In the same context, Ibrahim Al Mazand, Artistic Director of the Timitar Festival, said: “This 19th edition is a celebration of musical diversity, where the world’s cultures meet. We are excited to share this unique experience with the public.”

It is worth noting that the Timitar Festival was founded in 2004, and is currently considered among the top 25 festivals in the world. It has become an interesting event in the Moroccan music scene, attracting thousands of revelers from all over the world to taste the diversity of Moroccan and international music every year.
